I am not shure that one should assign MMTV to veterinary medicine.

Mice are not treated for it. It is more likely an artificial infection used for elucidating human disease. But may be that ist a part of veterinary medicine too? --Elisabeth Rieping 12:57, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bone metastasis in animal mammary cancer

[edit]

Hello Joelmills, on metastasis to the bones during feline breast or mammary cancer:

I learned when you see lameness of unknown origin in a cat, think of metastasis from breast cancer. But may be I am wrong. Are you shure? My best regards --Elisabeth Rieping 19:28, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is a report on bone metastasis in cats http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=9507421&query_hl=20&itool=pubmed_docsum

To the contrary, MMTV infected mice do not get bone metastases. That is why they are not ideal as a model for human breast cancer. --Elisabeth Rieping 19:47, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the statement about canine and feline mammary tumors because metastasis to the bones is rare and not typical, although it can happen. The link you provided said that there were only a few reported cases in cats. So I only disagree with bone metastasis being typical in dogs and cats with mammary tumors. --Joelmills 21:19, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

[edit]

Hi, I found another page, Mouse mammary tumour virus with almost the same content, though this page appears to be more useful, at a glance. I think you people should discuss this and merge the two. (WP:MERGE) TwoOars (T | C) 21:14, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merger done

[edit]

I have copied a few bits of information from Mouse mammary tumor virus and added a redirect link to that page. This page is essentially the same. Just minor modifications done. TwoOars (T | C) 19:19, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uncited content removed

[edit]

This content was without a source for quite some time, appears to contradict PMID 2545485 and I am not quite sure if dairy industry is relevant for MMTV:

The strongest hormone for virus production is the artificial cortisone dexamethasone.
Dexamethasone is a strong inducer of lactation and is used for this purpose in the dairy industry.

I believe the tumors are cancerous.

[edit]

I think the first part of this statement is incorrect:

"The tumors caused by MMTV in mice are benign and in general do not metastasize." I believe the tumors are malignant, not benign. I do not know whether or not they metastasize. I don't think they should be referred to as benign.

Look at the definition of benign neoplasm. MMTV looks like one of the most benign cases as host reproduction is required for transmission, what makes you think the tumors are malignant? Richiez (talk) 22:43, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The tumors are malignant with the potential for metastasis. They most often go to the mouse's lung rather than bone. If I figure out how to use this talk board, I could send you a reference. Thanks for responding - I hope to hear more! Hydrangea123 (talk) 23:04, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, if you have a pubmed id just add it as PMID 123456789 and the software will do the right thing. If you have an URL just paste it here, also look at WP:MEDRS - although this beeing an article about research in biology we can afford to be less strict at times. Richiez (talk) 11:26, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Richiez. I am including an article here that is relevant; I can find more. If you will note the article also indicates that the virus can be transmitted two ways in mice. It can be inherited, but it can infect through the milk when the mice are lactating and feeding the young. http://www.autoimmune.com/HMTVGen.html Hydrangea123 (talk) 17:30, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am including another article that speaks about MMTV. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19109792 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hydrangea123 (talkcontribs) 17:45, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This sources do not say anything whether or not MMTV causes metastazing tumors. I am pretty sure they are benign or overwhelmingly benign although I can not find a source saying exactly that at the moment. Btw have a look at PMID 21274409, I think it could be used to fill in some missing details here. Richiez (talk) 20:03, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for other articles indicating that mammary tumors in mice metastasize, I came across a few good articles indicating that they do indeed metastasize and are malignant. They tend to metastasize to lung tissue in mice. This is the article : http://ccm.ucdavis.edu/bcancercd/3/414.html#1 On the second page of that article there are slides of lung tissue containing metastatic disease from mammary tumors.
